Many people can’t imagine a single day without meat (unless you grew up poor like I did, with parents who couldn’t afford meat). We all know now that meat is not necessary in the human diet. But I know it’s challenging to quit meat. The meat industry and powerful fast-food corporations inject animals with all kinds of chemicals and drugs to produce more muscle mass for us to eat, and to keep them from dying in filthy and cramped conditions. We eat these drugs and hormones and become addicted.

Think I’m full of it? Okay, then try quitting meat for 30 days. See the withdrawals you go through and see if you can actually do it. Most people can’t because they’re addicted.

In overcoming any addiction you need support. Below are tips to help you kick your meat habit for good. After 30 days I believe you’ll feel so much better and liberated that you continue this way of eating.

Following these tips will help to ensure your success:

  1. Get rid of all non-vegetarian foods. One thing always seems to hold true: if you like eating it and it’s in the house, you will eat it. Donate it to a shelter.
    • If possible, get all “non-compliant” foods out of the house. Why give yourself the temptation? Give yourself every opportunity to be successful.
  2. Get excited about trying new foods! Try new vegetarian restaurants and cuisines. Find some recipes. For the 30 days to be a success, it will be helpful if you’re able to find some recipes that look appealing. Being a vegetarian isn’t all about eating fruit and salads.
    • There are thousands of delicious recipes that do not contain meat as an ingredient. Either purchase a book or find some recipes online.
    • Experiment a little. If you’re like most people, you probably don’t eat a very wide variety of foods. Now is a great time to branch out and try something new. Visit an Indian or Ethiopian restaurant, these cuisines specialize in flavorful dishes that don’t feature meat.
    • There’s a good chance you’ve yet to try your true favorite food.
  3. Think about all the foods you CAN have and not the things you can’t! Don’t allow yourself to feel disappointed that you can’t have a certain food you used to eat, instead get excited about about something you can have.
    • If you liked hamburgers before and it’s on your mind, think about having grilled portobello burger with blue cheese and balsamic sauce. Yum, that I’ll beat a beef burger all day long!
    • Thinking of peperoni pizza? That’s easy, think about having a margherita pizza with fresh basic and roasted garlic. Also, don’t underestimate a the noble cheese pizza. Toasted mozzarella is a wonderful treat but the taste transformation in the cheese doesn’t happen with a pizza covered in toppings.
  4. Tell the appropriate people. Obviously, anyone living in your household is going to notice a change in your dietary habits. But, consider which of your friends you’re going to inform of your 30-day vegetarian experiment.
    • We all have friends that are very supportive. However, most of us also have friends that can be less than supportive. Be wary of friends who are against vegetarianism (because they don’t want to give up meat!).
    • The best people to include will support you and challenge you to continue when the going gets tough. Avoid any social drag by keeping your vegetarian trial to yourself when it comes to those that are likely to make your experiment more difficult.
  5. Remind yourself of the benefits. Many things are exciting when first getting started, but become more challenging over time.
    • Take a few minutes each day to remind yourself of why you’re experimenting with this dietary change.
    • When you feel a meat craving, take a deep breath, look around you, be grateful to be alive. Now think about taking that away from an animal for the sake of pleasuring yourself with something that tastes good.
    • List the benefits in your journal and consider how liberated you’re going to feel when the 30 days have passed.
  6. Focus on one day at a time. It’s the first thing you learn in AA when trying to overcome an addiction. Looking ahead 20 days or more can make the task more daunting. By focusing only on just today, the task will see much more manageable.
    • You can certainly be successful today. If you string enough “todays” together, you’ll make it to the end with minimal challenges.

At the end of 30 days, evaluate the results. How do you feel? Did you spend more or less money on your food? Has your weight changed? Do you feel better about yourself?
